To "Carl S."
What the F***?! Vista works very well, and on old stuff too! I think I know what you mean about it not working with old hardware and there is a lot of that going around. But those complaints mostly come from stupid people (not likely DLTV viewers) who either give up too easily or just don't know any better. There is still a lot of old hardware that Vista works quite well with. In fact, I've had Vista running on some rather dated socket-478 and socket-A based systems where Vista blew XP out of the water! But then again, you DO need to know what the hell you are doing too (like Loyd or someone) so that you don't end up getting burned by trying to use something like and old video card that might have performance problems even under Windows 95!
The only "real" problem with Vista is DRIVER SUPPORT and that kind of support must come from whoever made your stuff - NOT MICROSOFT! However, Microsoft will provide and distribute anyone's drivers via their update process once Microsoft verifies that the drivers conform to Microsoft standards - or else you can do it "manually" with unverified drivers and assuming the company provides any. Frankly, upgrading and using Vista sort of enforces "rules" (A.K.A. "STANDARDS") which have been sorely missed over the years. It could also mean that Microsoft may have been reading Apple's book: "How To Be a Communist Company in a Free Market Society." However, I think Microsoft simply got tired of willy-nilly standards.
(But the complaint about Vista being too expensive is VERY valid - IT IS!)
Vista works... I've installed it on 3 systems, low range to high range (well a killer laptop) and it runs great. Never bluescreens, in fact zero reliability issues at all.
@FanMan:
The real problem with Vista is that most of the development time have been spent devising uber-DRM. Hence, designing the OS for "Content Providers" and not for the real paying customers and end users. Not only it bogs everything down but scientific papers were published proving that Vista driver demands ("standards") are literally impossible to satisfy (engineering margins are the only reason many things work at all).
Hence the "rebellion" of many manufacturers and the "real problem with Vista" you state: drivers. The affected hardware is not just old stuff nor is it all "hackable".
Hence Vista is the first MS OS for which I do not have a new version of within 3 months of the release. Or now, much, much later.
Only improvement is in security, but yet again not for the customers sake. Mostly to cover their own behinds and yet again reinforce the DRM base.
What would be my solution: remove every trace of DRM from the OS. Create and enforce proper (not certifiably impossible) standards. Let manufacturers build "black boxes" for the DRM-able media and let them implement it.

Vista works great. I have it running beautifully on two dual boot computers which are not new. I have older hardware and software. I am yet to find anything that it does not run. Games run great with sp1 and new nvidia drivers. I removed XP from both computers because i never needed to use it, like i was told i was going to. If i was to listen to people complaining about every new O\S i would still be using win 3.1 or win 95 because they are much faster and dont need a lot of memory or cpu. You have to keep moving forward or be left behind ...... Anyways Vista works great for me! You should actually try it,...you might me surprised.
If the guy looking for PC games can get it, Homeworld 2 is a definite recommend. Not only is it beautiful (it looks great on modern high spec systems), and the gameplay is great out of the box, but, there are now incredible mods for it, including the Star Wars mods, Babylon 5 mods, and the famous Point Defence mods.
