STUFF
• ExtremeTech's Jason Cross joins Robert on set.
• Follow-ups today instead of news.
We really want to know what the origin of fanboy is. Merriam-Webster has the date the word was first used as 1919.
Jason of Springfield, OR thought this might be what we were looking for:
"Fan boy actually dates back to ancient Rome. The fan boy was generally stationed just to the left of the piss boy (see Mel Brooks History of the world part 1 1981). Thanks for asking! Those of us in the know are always happy to help."
Now, Walt was a bit more speculative:
"I'll bet Fanboy comes from the guy's who used to prop planes to get the motors started ... that's the guy who grabs the propeller and pulls on it to get the airplane motor started."
Please! Help us find out what the origin of Fanboy is. We really want to know.
We had some inquiries whether or not the Voltaic Solar Back Pack would cause any problems at the airport. Sam contacted Voltaic and Jeff Crystal responded with this:
"The team here and lots of our customers have been on flights and haven't been stopped and exposed to any excess scrutiny except by people and staff curious about the solar panels -- 'hey are those solar panels?!' type of statements. In our mind, this is a good thing as more people get exposed to renewable energy and are often surprised to know that it really works."
Someone was also curious if there was something that could charge a laptop. Check out the Voltaic Generator .

• Scott sat down with Shane Bettenhausen to talk a bit about downloadable games. From WiiWare look for World of Goo, Toki Tori and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. Xbox Live has Bionic Commando: Rearm and PSN has WiPeoutHD and PixelJunk Eden. Shane recommends all.
• Yes, we finally give the iPhone its due. Sascha Segan, PCMag's Mobile Guru, reviews the iPhone and then Jason shows off his.
• Our first viewer question is from Darryl of Chicago, IL:
Can you give your opinions on RAID 0? Would the performance difference of the 2 drives really make a difference? My system is fast and scores a 4.6 in Vista. I basically use my PC for video editing and web surfing. Would it be worth it to go from 1 drive to a RAID 0 setup? I'm looking to make a fast PC even faster.
Next question is from Peter of Atlanta, GA:
My parents have a Samsung 50" LCD TV. The power in their area is a little wonky. What UPS, surge protector, line conditioner, etc should I get them to keep that big investment safe?

I felt this show was a bit boring and dragged on without a lot of subjects of interests.
This episode wasn't that exciting I felt

for Darryl of Chicago, IL (raid0 question)...

if you want speed and redundancy, go w/ RAID10 (or RAID1+0). it requires a minimum of 4 drives, but it would give you some fail protection along with a tremendous speed increase. RAID10 is faster than RAID5 because there is no parity. parity adds a little overhead that RAID10 does not have.

Regarding the surge suppressor, the problem is not only the voltage that goes up but also voltage that goes down.

The best solution is an "Online UPS". That is a UPS that uses the grid to charge the internal battery and the battery powers the inverter which in turn runs your gears.

In this way you have total protection because your gear is never connected to the grid.
